NEWPORT, RI — A man died after falling off the rocks in Newport Tuesday. The 25-year-old Providence man was jumping off the rocks with his friends, the Department of Environmental Management said.

The group was jumping off the rocks in an area known as "12 o'clock high" at the north end of the Brenton Point shoreline near Castle Hill Inn. Jumping and diving are prohibited in that area, DEM said.

Witnesses reported the victim was climbing back onto the rocks when a wave hit, knocking him back into the water. He was unable to get out. Newport Fire Department swimmers pulled the man from the water and firefighters began administering CPR. He was rushed to Newport Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
