Gas prices once again spiked in Rhode Island over the past week, raising the average cost per gallon by seven cents. On average, a gallon of regular, unleaded gas is now $2.70, 40 cents higher than the price in mid-February. Rhode Island's average cost is considerably lower than the national average of $2.84.

This time last year, the average cost per gallon in Rhode Island was five cents higher at $2.75. Experts blame the recent spike on the possibility of a decreased supply of crude oil in the international market.

"Monday morning crude oil was trending higher on reports that the U.S. State Department plans to end the use of waivers for countries to import oil from Iran in an attempt to end all oil exports from that country," said Lloyd Albert, AAA Northeast Senior Vice President of Public and Government Affairs. "Decreases in Iranian exports could tighten supply in the global market, though that could be balanced by increased U.S. production."
