July 23, 2020

Local artists have the opportunity to display their artwork in a new venue: City Hall. On Thursday, the City of Sioux Falls and the Sioux Falls Arts Council held a ribbon cutting for the new Carver Gallery at City Hall, a rotational art gallery inside the City Hall main floor lobby. The gallery is named in honor of Charlotte Carver, a lifelong champion for the arts in Sioux Falls, across the state and at the national level.

The City of Sioux Falls is committed to promoting the arts by exhibiting the works of talented artists who contribute greatly to the health and vitality of our community.

“Sioux Falls has a strong arts heritage that was built by city leaders like Charlotte Carver, the namesake of this new gallery. The Carver Gallery is an opportunity to not only showcase the talent of our local artists but also enrich our community, allowing those who step inside City Hall to benefit from this art,” said Mayor Paul TenHaken. “Through artwork, we can experience diverse perspectives, which helps encourage engagement and communication across our community.”

“This new gallery provides an opportunity to bring art into public spaces while highlighting the diverse arts scene in Sioux Falls. It’s been an exciting process to curate the walls at City Hall, and we are looking forward to future exhibitions,” said Sioux Falls Arts Council Executive Director Kellen Boice.

The City, with support from the Sioux Falls Arts Council and the City’s Visual Arts Commission, invites artists to submit proposals. The 2020-21 theme is “One Sioux Falls.” Artists are invited to propose works that serve as their visual interpretation or representation of “One Sioux Falls.” Proposals will be reviewed and selected, and displays will be updated twice per year. The City, with support from the Sioux Falls Arts Council, has budgeted a stipend for selected artists.
