Salt Lake City Kicks-Off Federal Grant Program With Affordable Housing Tour

On Thursday, October 3rd, Mayor Jackie Biskupski will join the Community Development Corporation of Utah (CDCU), and new homeowners, Mario and Emma Melendez, to kick-off the application period for U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funding managed by the City. (See full event details below)The City is currently accepting applications from interested entities for the following grants:

Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)The CDBG program’s primary objective is to promote the development of viable urban communities by providing affordable housing, suitable living environments, and economic opportunities for persons of low and moderate income.

Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG)The ESG program’s primary objective is to assist individuals and families regain housing stability after experiencing a housing or homelessness crisis.

HOME Investment Partnership Program (HOME)The HOME program’s primary objective is to create affordable housing opportunities for low-income households.

Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA)The HOPWA program’s primary objective is to provide housing assistance and related supportive services to persons living with HIV/AIDS and their families.

Based on previous years estimates, the City anticipates receiving approximately $3.3 million in CDBG funding, $300,000 in Emergency Solutions Grants, $866,000 in HOME funding, and $475,000 in HOPWA funds. The exact numbers will be known later this year.

Recently, the City awarded CDCU $75,000 in HOME funding to help renovate a home on the west side with the goal of bringing it back into the City’s affordable housing stock. The new owners also received $13,100 from a down payment assistance program managed by CDCU. They moved into their new home last week.

Earlier this year, the Trump Administration proposed dramatic cuts to HUD funding for the FY20 budget—including fully eliminating the CDBG and HOME Programs. Similar proposals were made by the Administration for FY17, FY18, and FY19. Funding for these programs was maintained through a nationwide education program.

“Given the current efforts by the Trump Administration to cut these housing programs, it is more important than ever for us to show how this funding has the power to change lives, and in the process revitalize communities,” said Mayor Jackie Biskupski.

Information for organizations interested in applying for funding:Interested entities are invited to submit applications for activities that support local and national program requirements. An application resource guide is available online at www.slc.gov/hand. Optional training sessions will be held on October 17, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. and October 24, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. for potential applicants in Room 126 of the City and County Building at 451 South State Street. Applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, November 3, 2019. Late applications will not be accepted.
