Hand-Painted Benches Stolen In Vienna, Information Sought

The Vienna Arts Society is calling for help to recover two stolen benches that were painted by artists.

VIENNA, VA — The Vienna Arts Society is asking for the public's help in recovering two stolen hand-painted benches. The "Spring" bench was stolen from 512 Maple Avenue West in July, while the "Big Wave" bench was stolen from 100 Church Street NE in August.

"It's possible someone witnessed their theft and they may no longer be in the immediate area," said Lu Cousins, art center director for the Vienna Arts Society. "We have been working with the Vienna Police Department to secure the remaining benches and we're hoping that anyone with information will come forward."

The benches were created as part of the Vienna Arts Society's "Take a Seat, Vienna!" campaign for its 50th anniversary. Artist Mary Ellyn Perkowski drew inspiration from a Vienna botanical garden to paint the dark floral design of the "Spring" bench. The "Big Wave" bench painted by Viktoriya Maslova portrays a seaside landscape.

For the campaign, the Vienna Arts Society purchased 42 Amish-built benches with help from local business sponsorships. The benches, designed by artists to highlight Vienna's small town charm, have been displayed since April. Artists and the Vienna Arts Society's program committee won the Town of Vienna's Volunteer of the Year award for the "Take a Seat, Vienna!" campaign.

Benches will be auctioned off at the Vienna Community Center on Nov. 2. Proceeds benefit Vienna Arts Society outreach activities, art demonstrations and classes.
