Portland’s Most Anticipated Restaurant Openings, Fall 2019

From a beautiful new Moroccan bar to a long-awaited Italian restaurant and butchery

Though Portlanders still have a few more weeks, at least, to enjoy the sunny days and warm evenings, fall is just on the horizon with its promise of changing the city from a verdant green to a lush red and orange. The blissfully smoke-free summer brought it with a number of fantastic restaurant openings, including the excellent ramen shop and whisky bar Hapa Ramen, the long, long awaited Magna, and a Lebanese cocktail bar Pettygrove Station, and now it’s time to start looking ahead.

As always, there are even more restaurants and bars to come, including places long in the making. Spots like Cicoria, the new pizzeria from Ava Gene’s Joshua McFadden, or XLB’s new location still need some more time in the oven, so to speak, but other spots are planning to open their doors to the public as early as this month. Here are the restaurants that Portlanders can expect in fall of 2019.

Two Wrongs

No, it’s not the shortly lived cocktail bar and nightclub that closed in 2018, but it does share the name and will be in the Pearl — Two Wrongs comes from River Pig owner Ramzy Hattar along with some bar veterans and will feature tropical drinks and slushies paired with Moroccan and Armenian cuisine like sweet and savory crepes, developed by Instagram food personality Chef Monkey, aka Naira Ayvazyan. The space itself sounds dreamy, with Spanish and Moroccan tiles and Moroccan lanterns.
Where it’s opening: 617 Northwest 13th Avenue
When it’s opening: September 18 if everything goes right

Campana

Essentially an extension of Grand Army Tavern’s weekly pasta nights, Campana will go into the restaurant’s private dining room and sling plates of classic red sauce pasta three nights a week, to begin. Alongside the plates of spaghetti and meatballs and linguini with clams, diners will find heartier entrees like beef cheeks in Barolo and a pork cutlet in spicy tomato sauce.
When it’s opening: September 19
Where it’s Opening: 901 Northeast Oneonta Street

Zapapizza

From Nick Zukin, the man behind the fun, casual taqueria Mi Mero Mole, this newest endeavor is another Portland pizza place, but one that offers some pretty unorthodox toppings in the form of Mexican ingredients. These thick-crust pies will be topped with everything from mole sauce to fried grasshoppers, and will be supplemented by salads, wings, and pastas. 10 percent of the store’s profits will go to charities that serve the Mexican community, both in Portland and abroad.
When it’s opening: Mid-September
Where it’s opening: 503 West Burnside street

Bae’s Chicken

One of the city’s most prolific restaurateurs, Micah Camden is pivoting from his recent trend of vegan ice cream and heading back to fried chicken with Bae’s Chicken. He’ll be doing so with Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive end Ndamukong Suh, and the pair will serve whole, broken down chicken with a variety of approaches, including skin-on fried chicken leg “nuggets,” fried wings on waffles, and sandwiches both grilled and fried. All of this will go down at the spacious former home of Ash Street Saloon.
Where it’s opening: 225 SW Ash Street
When it’s opening: Late September

Mama Bird

Not content to only helm one of the city’s top sandwich shops, Eater PDX Chef of the Year for 2017 Gabriel Pascuzzi is just about ready to open Mama Bird, a casual restaurant serving smoked and grilled chicken along with seasonal vegetable dishes and light starch sides like coal-roasted sweet potatoes. In case things seem too healthy, Mama Bird will also offer DIY s’mores, a large draught list, and frosé.
Where it’s opening: 2121 Northwest Savier Street.
When it’s opening: Early fall

Sicillian pizza at Pizza Doughnais

Pizza Doughnais

Yet another pizzeria hitting Portland in 2019, but this one is unique in that it comes from two home chefs, Jessica and Justin Donais. Pizza Doughnais will serve thick, Sicillian-style pizzas that draw from both Jessica Donais’ California upbringing and Justin Donais’ East Coast background for a combination of the two styles. Somewhat appropriately for a pizza spot, the cozy 550 square foot restaurant will move into the Brooklyn neighborhood.
Where it’s opening: 3539 Southeast Milwaukie Avenue.
When it’s opening: Sometime in October

Vivian/Dottir

Straight out of Reykjavík, Kex, a new Icelandic hotel, will open with restaurant Vivian and rooftop bar Dottir. Chef Ólafur Ágústsson, who helped restaurant Reykjavík’s Dill get a Michelin star, is collaborating with executive chef Alex Jackson, previously of Ned Ludd and the Michelin starred restaurant Sons & Daughters in San Francisco, on a menu of Nordic cuisine and cocktails, but no menu details have been released yet.
Where it’s opening: 100-110 Northeast Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard
When it’s opening: Late fall

R&R

Keeping in line with the many tropical-themed bars opening in Portland recently, R&R calls itself a “vacation” themed bar, with mai tais, margaritas, coconut shrimp, fish tacos, and poke. The bar will take over the space previously home to The Abbey Bar & Bottle Shop, and comes from Mike Reed and Scott McCulloch who own the 21st Avenue Bar and Grill just across the street.
Where it’s opening: 716 Northwest 21st Avenue
When it’s opening: Early October

Papi Chulo’s

A stylish new taqueria from Ramzy Hattar, who is also working on Two Wrongs, and chef Antonio Javier Palma Caceres of River Pig, Papi Chulo’s will open in late fall near both of Hattar’s other spots on 13th. The menu will mostly be tacos filled with grilled meat and will draw from both Caceres’ home of the Yucatan and the broader Mexican map. It will, of course, also have margaritas.
Where it’s opening: 611 NW 13th Avenue.
When it’s opening: October 23

Lavka

Kachka, one of the city’s most beloved spots and a long time resident of the Essential 38, is expanding yet again, this time with a casual deli space. Going into the second floor of the restaurant, Lavka will offer Slavic grab-and-go items like Russian open-faced sandwiches, and “Lunchables-style” grab-and-go boxes with spreads and snacks. It will also operate as a market, selling jarred smoked sprats and frozen Kachka dumplings, pickles, and house-made charcuterie.
Where it’s opening: 960 Southeast 11th Avenue
When it’s opening: Late fall

Piccone’s Corner

Pig and rabbit farmer Austin Piccone’s butchery and Italian restaurant sadly won’t be opening this summer as originally planned, but he’s been making up for it with a number of pop-up dinners around town as a preview. The head chef Nic Maraziti comes by way of Ava Gene’s and Bar Casa Vale, and the menu will draw from their Italian-American Heritage, with fresh pastas made in house. Noah Grobart, the head meat cutter at the now shuttered Old Salt Marketplace, will handle the whole-hog butchery.
Where it’s opening: 3434 Northeast Sandy Boulevard
When it’s opening: Early-to-mid November
