New Hotel Bar

The Kex hotel’s Icelandic-ish restaurant, Dóttir, is reopening to dine-in customers this Friday, but it won’t be the only place to eat and drink in the hotel: Lady of the Mountain, Kex’s rooftop bar, will open for the first time on the same day, with a menu of snacks and summer-y cocktails. Expect brined potato chips with smoky skyr and caramelized onion dip, open-faced ham and cheese sandwiches, and spritzes spiked with Aperol and aquavit. Customers can make reservations on Tock.

Another Switch-Up

The Hoxton, the restaurant-filled hotel on Burnside, has a new executive chef. BJ Smith, the owner of restaurants like Smokehouse Provisions and Kim Jong Smokehouse, is now running all of the hotel’s restaurants. The chef has started tweaking menus, adding chipotle smoked ribs and scallop aguachile at the rooftop restaurant and bar Tope and working on a full menu revamp to the menu at the Hoxton’s speakeasy-style basement bar. Tope and the hotel’s coffee bar have reopened to the public, with Lovely Rita reopening later this summer.

The team at Submarine Hospitality originally built the menus for the hotel restaurants when it opened, with chef Johnny Leach (Chalino) at the helm; in late 2019, the hotel’s Mexican ground-floor restaurant, then called La Neta, eventually transformed the broader Lovely Rita. Leach left the restaurant, replaced by Cameron Addy. The Hoxton is no longer connected to Submarine Hospitality.

Restaurant Opening to Know

DarSalam, the Iraqi restaurant with locations in Northeast and downtown Portland, has entered another quadrant, opening a third location in the Pearl District. The menu includes classics from the other restaurants, including the pickled mango salad, as well as rice plates and sampler platters. Order takeout online from any of the restaurants online.

Farmworker Aid

Gov. Kate Brown has created a new fund to aid agricultural workers impacted by COVID-19. The Oregon Worker Quarantine Fund is set aside for agricultural workers who need to self-quarantine or recover from COVID-19. The fund gives farm workers up to $1,290 in financial support for a two-week quarantine. Agricultural workers can apply by calling 1-888-274-7292. Funds are available to workers, regardless of immigration status.
