Hubbard, Lydy Earn Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue cross country and track & field graduate Susan Hubbard and Boilermaker wrestler Dylan Lydy were announced as recipients of Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarships on Wednesday, honoring the Purdue graduates and granting them each $7,500 toward their continuing education.
Hubbard earned her bachelor's degree in Biological Engineering in December, 2019, and graduated with a 3.97 cumulative grade point average. She spent the spring semester at Purdue as a chemistry teaching assistant and will begin studying chemical and biological engineering while pursuing her PhD at the University of Wisconsin in the fall.
A native of Indianapolis, Lydy earned his bachelor's degree in kinesiology in May of 2019, graduating with a cumulative 3.29 GPA. He is currently working on his master's degree in health and kinesiology at Purdue, expected to compete his schooling in December.
Hubbard is the first member of the Boilermakers' cross country and track & field program to earn a Big Ten postgraduate scholarship since the awards began distribution in 2013, while Lydy is the fourth member of the Purdue wrestling program to garner the award, including the second in as many years following Ben Thornton's award in 2019.
Each Big Ten institution developed its own on-campus selection process when awarding the scholarship. Student-athletes must have maintained at least a 3.2 GPA, demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intended to continue their academic work beyond their bachelor's degree at a graduate degree program.
The scholarship will be used to pay expenses of the student's postgraduate education to include such related activities as research and teaching, as well as other expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, required course-related supplies and books.
Hubbard won eight races in her cross country and track & field career as a Boilermaker and claimed nine runner-up finishes. She raced at the NCAA Great Lakes Cross Country Regional in 2019 and competed at every Big Ten indoor and outdoor track & field championship and two conference cross country championships in her career.
Her final season was filled with career-best marks, as she achieved five personal-record times in her senior campaign. It began on the indoor track with a time of 2:54.62 in the 1,000-meter run on Dec. 7, 2018, along with a mile time of 4:50.49 on Feb. 9, 2019. Outdoors, she placed fifth at the prestigious Drake Relays in the 1,500 with a time of 4:27.50 on April 25. During the 2019 cross country season, Hubbard set a PR in the 5,000 with a time of 17:57.3 on Oct. 4 and added a 6,000-meter personal-best time of 22:09.8 at the Big Ten Championships on Nov. 3.Hubbard concluded her Boilermaker career with her first career appearance at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Nov. 15.
Hubbard is a five-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and was named to the Dean's List, the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and Semester Honors every semester as a Boilermaker.
Lydy completed a history career in 2020, posting one of the best seasons all-time at Purdue, finishing among the Boilermakers' career leaders in wins and takedowns and earning First Team All-America honors. At 31-2 overall and a third-place finish at the 2020 Big Ten Championships, he earned the No. 4 seed at the 2020 NCAA Championships before the event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He won both the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and the Midlands Championships at 174 pounds, becoming the first wrestler in program history to win both tournaments in the same season. His record marked the No. 3 all-time win percentage in a season at Purdue, and he finished tied for eighth in school history with 111 career wins. His 267 career takedowns rank 13th in Boilermaker history, and he surrendered just five total takedowns in his senior campaign.
Lydy was named to the coaches' honor roll five times in his career, made the athletics director's honor roll twice and earned Purdue University Semester Honors on two occasions. A three-time Academic All-Big Ten pick and 2019 NWCA Scholar All-American, Lydy competed at the NCAA Championships at 174 as both a sophomore and junior, reaching the Round of 12 each time. He was a flawless 10-0 in overtime in his senior year, finished an impressive 23-4 for his career in extra time and will go down as one of the most clutch wrestlers in program history.
