UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- The official attendance figures from the 2019-20 men's basketball season released by the NCAA last week show Richmond among the nation's top 25 percent in attendance and as one of the national leaders among schools of its size. The Spiders played before an average crowd of 6,001 at the Robins Center last season, an increase of five percent from 2018-19.
Richmond ranked 85th among the 350 Division I schools to report attendance data, and fifth in the Atlantic 10 behind Dayton, VCU, Saint Louis, and Rhode Island. As a whole, the Atlantic 10 ranked ninth in attendance among the 32 Division I men's basketball conferences.Â
Richmond's crowds swelled late in the season as the Spiders, who went 14-2 at the Robins Center, played their way into NCAA Tournament contention. An average crowd of 6,826 attended the Spiders final six home games of 2019-20, a stretch that included four sell-outs: Dayton, George Washington, VCU, and Massachusetts.
With a total enrollment of just 4,002 students, Richmond ranked second in Division I in attendance among schools its size or smaller. Siena College averaged 6,228 fans per home game in 2019-20 and has a total enrollment of approximately 3,200 students.Â
2019-20 is the fifth time Richmond has averaged at least 6,000 fans per home game in seven seasons since the Robins Center was renovated prior to the start of the 2013-14 campaign, shrinking the capacity to 7,201. 2020-21 will be the Spiders 49th season in the arena, which opened in December 1972.Â
