Danny Lafferty: Left Back (Free Agent)

The most experienced left back on this list is former Northern Ireland international Danny Lafferty. A former Celtic youth player, the 30-year-old was part of Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United side that won League One in 2017 where he played thirty-seven games as a mainstay of their back four. He also played a big part in Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League in the 2014/15 season, so he’s no stranger to success.

Despite not being in Wilder's plans last season, a January loan move to Peterborough United showed the defender had lost none of his talent, proving that he still has more than enough about him to be a leading League One left-back - and he wouldn’t cost a penny.

David Sesay: Left/Right Back (Crawley)

At just 20 year old, the highly rated left back is one of the hottest properties in League Two and has already been courted by numerous Championship clubs.

Former Crawley boss Harry Kewell only brought Sesay to the club last summer, but already his lighting quick pace and endless energy has alerted clubs further up the pyramid, with rumours of West Brom bidding around £350k for him last January. He’s also versatile, with the ability to play anywhere across the back four.

Whilst he is far from the finished article, the youngster is showing all the hallmarks of being a footballer destined to play at a higher level, with marked improvements in his game becoming evident on a weekly basis at The People’s Pension Stadium (yes, really).

It may be his pace and attacking prowess that grabs the headlines, but he’s very adept at stopping crosses in the box and won’t shirk a tough tackle. He could be a great acquisition.

Harry Pickering: Left Back (Crewe)

Although barely out of his teenage years, Crewe’s Harry Pickering has completed almost a century of league appearances for Crewe after signing a professional contract when he was only sixteen. He’s tall too, standing at 6ft.

Although mainly operating at left back, his wand of a left foot has turned into a secret weapon at Gresty Road, where he racks up the assists from deep. He’s capable of filling in down the left hand side as a winger too, whilst also being more than a capable wing back should the formation dictate it.

Clean in the tackle, cultured and mature beyond his years, Pickering is another League Two left back that is showing progress that will surely see him move beyond the fourth tier.

Courtney Senior: Winger (Colchester)

Senior’s outstanding performances last term saw him score six goals from the wing, and he duly picked up Colchester’s young player of the year - no mean feat when you consider he had ruptured his anterior ligament only a year previous.

Comfortable on the left, the right or in a number ten role, the 21-year-old proved to be a key creative outlet as Colchester evolved into genuine promotion contenders in the 2018/19 season.

We may be well stocked in that area with the likes of Lynden Gooch, Aiden McGeady and Chris Maguire, but if Senior keeps progressing at the level he is, his signing would be a no-brainer regardless.

George Williams: Attacking Midfield (Forest Green)

A full Wales international, the energetic attacking midfielder seems to have finally found a home at Gloucester's Forest Green after a nomadic couple of seasons out on loan to various different outfits.

After leaving Fulham when they were in the Premier League in the summer of 2018, Williams took a chance on moving to the fourth tier with recently promoted Forest Green and, under the tutelage of Mark Cooper, he progressed in a strong, athletic goalscoring number ten with an eye for a long range screamer.

Although not the tallest at 5”8, the Welshman is neat in possession and a powerful runner who is the very definition of “direct”. He has a thunderbolt of a right foot and - despite having plenty of central midfield options - offers something different to what our other midfielders do.
