The University of Alabama has several of its former pass-catchers making an impact in the NFL.

Whether it’s Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley for the Atlanta Falcons, Amari Cooper for the Dallas Cowboys or O.J. Howard with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the success has been well-documented.

There are other former Crimson Tide stand outs who continue to make their way up the depth chart for their respective teams.

For example, rookie tight end Irv Smith Jr. could being the No. 3 option in the passing game for the Minnesota Vikings behind Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs.

Then there are guys like Robert Foster and Hale Hentges, who have gone from unknown undrafted free agents to virtue locks to make the 53-man roster for the Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts.

One more former undrafted free agent out of Alabama who caught the attention of many prior to the 2018 season is Cam Sims.

After emerging for the Washington Redskins (five catches for 131 yards in the preseason), Sims was on his way to a steady role on special teams and as a rotational receiver before an ankle injury ended his season prematurely.

So, where does that leave Sims as the 2019 season approaches? Well, that’s an interesting question.

According to some people, Sims won’t even make the team. Others, however, believe that he won’t only make the team, he could potentially be one of the top four receivers on the team.

JP Finlay with NBCS Washington spoke with RosterWatch and mentioned that Sims may even be ahead of former first-round pick Josh Doctson on the depth chart. He also added that the team was trying to move Doctson as a result of several other options being ahead of him:

Sims is one of the most physically gifted receivers on Washington’s roster. At 6-foot-5, 215 pounds, he’s got the length and overall size needed to be a threat in the red zone.

He’s also got the ability to work inside or out, as he was sometimes used as a “big slot” during his days in Tuscaloosa.

Unfortunately, Sims was never able to show what he could do with a lot of targets while he was at Alabama. In four seasons, he only secured 41 receptions for 467 yards and two touchdowns.

Still, the fact that Sims has shown some impressive play-making ability in camp, both in 2018 and 2019, for the Redskins really helps his chances.

And so does him making plays on special teams like the one below:

Here’s to hoping that Sims can continue to develop and add to the impressive amount of offensive standouts that Alabama has in the NFL.
