Saints creating roster spots ahead of NFL trade deadline

The New Orleans Saints reported three roster moves on the league transactions wire Tuesday. In addition to the release of running back Zach Zenner, the Saints waived linebacker Ray-Ray Armstrong and practice squad quarterback J.T. Barrett.

These moves created several vacancies. The 53-man roster is now set at just 51 players after the release of Zenner and Armstrong, while the 10-man practice squad is undermanned with just eight members (tight end Dan Arnold was promoted before Sunday’s kickoff with the Chicago Bears).

While these openings are likely going to be occupied soon once the Saints finish visits with free agents like cornerbacks Kayvon Webster and Captain Munnerlyn, the timing is conspicuous in light of the looming NFL trade deadline (next Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 3 p.m. CT). It’s very curious that they would create so many openings so close to the last opportunity for teams to work out deals with each other.

Still, it’s more realistic to expect changes to follow as Saints centerpieces Drew Brees and Alvin Kamara return to practice before the bye week, and as more is learned about injured defensive backs Eli Apple, J.T. Gray, and Patrick Robinson.
