Motorcyclist Killed In Early Morning Fremont Hit-And-Run

FREMONT (CBS SF) -- A motorcyclist was killed early Wednesday in a hit-and-run collision on the southbound Highway 680 off-ramp to Mission Boulevard in Fremont, authorities said.

Authorities said the motorcyclist crashed into a car that made a left-hand turn in front of him here at Mission and Brown at around 5:25 a.m.

The car's driver, and possibly a passenger, got out and ran away, police said, but left clues in the car about their destination: the Motel 6 less than a 1/2 mile from the crash site.

Officers went to the motel, found the rooms the vehicle was registered to and detained two individuals for questioning.

"Right now, investigators have two people of interest that we're talking to," said Fremont police Lt. Ariel Quimson. "One of them being the registered owner of the vehicle...We are still trying to determine who the driver of the vehicle was."

The motorcyclist was taken to a trauma center, but succumbed to his injuries. Fremont police believe the victim was a San Jose man in his 20's.

The ultimate charges will be up to the district attorney, but police say the fact that the driver ran away doesn't bode well for leniency. The driver could face charges of vehicular homicide.

Investigators said they did not know yet if drug or alcohol use played a role in the crash.

Authorities reopened Mission Boulevard to traffic shortly before 12 p.m.
