Samuel L. Jackson improvised one of Nick Fury's most hilarious scenes in Captain Marvel, directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck say. MCU fans were treated to a trip down memory lane with the Brie Larson-led flick. Set in 1995, the movie paved the way for the public to see how a young (and still two-eyed) Fury worked before he became the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and proponent of the Avengers Initiative. This gave Jackson the opportunity to portray the character a bit differently, considering where he was at that point in his life.
Aside from introducing fans to the MCU's first female headlining superhero, Captain Marvel tackled the Kree-Skrull war, debuting a slew of new characters from both sides of the conflict such as Starforce - Kree's elite squad, Yon Rogg (Jude Law) and Talos (Ben Mendelsohn). Fury, who tagged along during Carol Danvers' mission to help the Skrulls get away from the ruthless Kree, had contact with the alien races. At one point in the flick, he got to sit down and observe a Skrull autopsy. Curious about the being's gender, he lifted the white sheet covering its body to see exactly what this naked alien looked like.
The bit earned chuckles from moviegoers, especially given how Jackson subtly did it and nonchalantly reacted right after checking out the alien. As it turns out, the scene was not in Captain Marvel's script. Boden reveals to Comic Book that it was an improvisation on the actor's part, and since this made the scene much more interesting and funny, they decided to keep it in the final cut. "He just did this, and we kept it in because we thought it was pretty funny," Fleck adds.
Jackson had the opportunity to play a less intense Fury in Captain Marvel, but he'll be back to the character's signature tough-as-nail persona in his next outing in the MCU, Spider-Man: Far From Home. Fury will bring together Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) for a new mission following the events of Avengers: Endgame. And similar to how he treats new recruits, he uses tough love on the young hero, which will be quite an adjustment for Peter following the emotional bond he developed with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.).
Being one of the few actors who joined the MCU in 2008's Iron Man and is still around, fans have seen Jackson play Fury multiple times. But, he was only known to be this enigma working in the shadows and providing help to the Avengers when they needed it until Captain Marvel. Given that Fury was a lot younger in the movie, the actor was able to goof around on the set more, letting his own wisecracking personality and charisma shine through. It was such a fresh take on the character that some may even now see him in an entirely different light just because they know more about his history.
