It’s being reported that new Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl will be looking for a small exodus of surplus players come the opening of the January window and one name amongst the speculated players will no doubt split fans slightly.

With Steven Davis being continually linked with a return to Ibrox and Rangers, it’s no surprise to see the Mirror (Thurs P64) namecheck him in their story, and neither really is forgotten goalkeeper Fraser Forster as the club were no doubt hopeful of seeing him secure a move last August given the signing of Angus Gunn.

The third player mentioned features regularly on the rumour mill, especially a return to Italy, and that’s Manolo Gabbiadini but I’d assumed, wrongly, that Hasenhuttl would have a better plan when it came to getting the best from the striker again.

As previously covered, the gaffer has already said he’s not yet looking at the January window as he wants to assess the squad at hand fully, but he’ll no doubt want to freshen things up somewhat just to change the atmosphere in the dressing room and that would mean departures and a few fresh faces.

Given how long this squad have been on the slide in reality, I can imagine a few more would be available at the right price as well.
