Michigan State football has more depth than some might expect heading into the 2019 season. What could the two-deep look like?

We are officially single-digit days away from the start of the 2019 season and Michigan State is gearing up for what could be a special year.

Not many people are picking the Spartans to win the Big Ten East, but that’s just how they like it. Mark Dantonio has gotten his team up by preaching about the chip on the shoulder and he’s thrived as an underdog throughout his coaching career in East Lansing.

In fact, each year the Spartans had six wins or less, he’s followed it up with a bounce-back year, mostly 10-plus win seasons, and Big Ten title contention.

Will that be the same in 2019? Let’s take a look at the depth chart that could lead this team back to the top.

Offensive Line

Starting tackles: Cole Chewins (LT), AJ Arcuri (RT)
Backups: Jordan Reid, Kevin Jarvis

Cole Chewins is still trying to get back to 100 percent but the staff may be bringing him along slowly as to avoid a more serious injury, so don’t be surprised if you see a guy like Kevin Jarvis shift over to the left tackle spot if the senior misses time. At right tackle, AJ Arcuri has been turning heads and he’s been getting reps with the No. 1s, which is good news for his development. He’ll likely be backed up by Jordan Reid who has starting experience.

Don’t sleep on the crop of freshmen in Nick Samac, JD Duplain and Devontae Dobbs who could all provide some depth here, too.

Starting guards: Tyler Higby (LG), Kevin Jarvis (RG)
Backups: Luke Campbell, Nick Samac OR Matt Carrick

Tyler Higby is the offensive lineman with the most to prove this upcoming season after a horrid 2018 campaign. The senior guard will need to prove himself early on or he’ll be replaced quickly — expect his leash to be short, especially coming off an injury. Kevin Jarvis has sewn up one of the guard spots and could even shift over to left guard, if need be. Backing them up will be Luke Campbell — who could also start — and Matt Carrick who could be pushed by rising star Nick Samac as a true freshman.

Starting center: Matt Allen
Backup: Blake Bueter

Matt Allen has a lot to live up to if he’s going to be like his older brothers who both earned All-Big Ten honors while in East Lansing. He’s projected as the starting center, but former walk-on Blake Bueter shouldn’t be slept on. This position will be relatively sewn up, but there’s plenty of depth here with guys like Higby, Samac and even Jacob Isaia getting reps as backups.
