CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools announced that May 1 is now an optional teacher work day. This comes after thousands of teachers requested off work to attend a rally in Raleigh to march for better resources for schools.

  • This now means parents are left scrambling to find childcare for that day.
  • Flour Power Cooking School and Children's Theater of Charlotte are both offering day camps.

This now means parents are left scrambling to find childcare for that day.

Two organizations in Charlotte are helping parents by taking their kids off their hands.

Flour Power Cooking School and Children's Theater of Charlotte are both offering day camps so students can learn a new skill, and so parents don't have to take the day off work.

"We thought it would be a good idea to open the camp for that day to give parents something purposeful for their kids to do," said Ginger Cason with Flour Power. "Not all babysitting situations or childcare situations can accommodate a last minute, which, May 1 believe it or not is kind of last minute for a parent."

"All of the sudden out of nowhere there was a teacher workday, and then it was 'Hey, what do we do with our students?' We don't want to have them just sit around all day and watch TV, play video games things like that," said Micah Hein with Charlotte Children's Theater. "We want to take them to a place that has meaning and is valuable. So they're so thankful that we were able to accommodate their needs and create this programming on May 1, which makes us feel great too."
