From here on out, the brunt of the Albany Fire Department's training will be conducted inside and on top of a new mobile trailer.

"The art of fighting fires has changed drastically over the years. This piece of equipment gives us a tremendous one-up now," said Albany Fire Department Chief Joseph Gregory.

Unveiled Friday at the Port of Albany, most of the trailer's full cost was covered by a $462,000 federal grant secured by Senator Chuck Schumer.

"It's expensive and local communities, even big communities like Albany, have a rough time paying for it," Schumer said.

Built by the company Lion here in Albany, the trailer can simulate most of the hazards and challenges firefighters may face in the field.

"It contains a live fire pit that's propane fed, we can utilize materials, we can burn class A materials such as wood," Gregory said.

"We've had massive fires in the city of Albany and the training of our firefighters is so important for their safety and the safety of our residents," said Albany Mayor (D) Kathy Sheehan.

Albany's fire department is the first in the country to get a mobile training trailor of such state-of-the-art. Until now, the city's firefighters had to conduct their live fire training at facilities in neighboring communities.

"Both of those are good facilities, they're adequate facilities. But we as the city of Albany, and one of the biggest fire departments in the area, felt we needed our own training facility," Gregory said.

By being mobile, Albany firefighters can bring the trailer to train with their mutual aid partners. Gregory is hopeful it is the first step towards creating a permanent training center in the Capital City.

"There's so many different components to this particular unit here that we can build off of this and bring our firefighters into the next century," Gregory said.
