MILWAUKEE (SPECTRUM NEWS) -- The Milwaukee community honored Police Officer Kou Her during a vigil on Monday night.

Members of his family, the Hmong community and officers from the Milwaukee Police Department gathered to celebrate his life at the Albright United Methodist Church. Hundreds of people attended to light candles and share memories of the 27-year-old who leaves behind a large family. He died early in the morning on June 18; he had just gotten off his shift when police say a drunk driver ran a red light and hit his car at the intersection of 60th and Capitol. That driver, Dante James, ran off but was later caught. He faces multiple felony charges. Police say Officer Her was still wearing his uniform the morning of the crash.

“We as a community need to work harder and closer with law enforcement and elected officials to come up with stricter drunk driving laws so we don’t have to keep organizing candlelight vigils,” said family spokesperson Long Her.

An online fund has been setup to help with funeral costs. You can donate by clicking here.

A public visitation for Officer Her will be held this weekend at the Good Hope Center at 7323 North 76th St. The service on June 29 runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Members of the Milwaukee Police Department are expected to speak between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. A visitation will also be held on June 30 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Funeral services will take place on July 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery in Milwaukee.
