Last year, Manuel Pellegrini failed to win any of his opening four games in the league as West Ham boss. The Chilean had to wait until the middle of September for his first three points.

Having faced Liverpool at Anfield for the opening game of last season, there is a familiar feeling of dread associated with the start of a new campaign.

The East Enders will have to do it the hard way again

  • 2019/20: Man City (H)
  • 2018/19: Liverpool (A)
  • 2017/18: Manchester United (A)
  • 2016/17: Chelsea (A)
  • 2015/16: Arsenal (A)
  • 2014/15: Tottenham (H)

In the 2013/14 season, the Hammers welcomed newly-promoted Cardiff City to Upton Park on the opening day.

But since then, the starts they've been handed have been dreadful!

In their previous five opening games of the season, West Ham have won just once - against Arsenal at the Emirates in 2015.

The upcoming visit of Manchester City means West Ham have now been handed an opening day fixture against a top six side for the past six seasons in a row.

And while the potentially imminent signing of Pablo Fornals will act as a silver lining for fans, seeing Man City up first on the fixture list will not.
