Senegal 0-1 Algeria: Freak goal sees Riyad Mahrez and co win Africa Cup of Nations

Algeria have won the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time since 1990 after securing a 1-0 triumph over Senegal.

Baghdad Bounedjah's strike inside two minutes, an effort which took a big deflection off Salif Sane was all that separated the two sides in Cairo.

Senegal, who last made the final in 2002, thought they were given a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty in the second-half for a handball only for it to be overturned after a VAR review.

It means the wait for Senegal, whose star player is Liverpool forward Sadio Mane, for a first AFCON crown goes on while Algeria have won it for the second time.

However, it was Mane and co who were the better side but M'Baye Niang and Rais M'bholi were unable to convert their two best chances.

But the decisive moment of the game came when there was a reversal of the decision to award Senegal a penalty on the hour mark.

A cross by Ismaila Sarr struck Adlene Guedioura's arm and referee Neant Alioum gave the spot-kick, however, he quickly indicated that a VAR review was under way.

And after watching replays on the pitch side monitor, which clearly showed Guedioura's arm being by his side, Alioum changed his mind.

It was the correct decision but the result was harsh as Algeria won the final despite only managing one shot on goal.
