John McGinn was linked with Manchester United during the summer and talkSPORT's very own Alan Brazil says his former club would be wise to sign the Aston Villa star.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly wanted to bring the Scotland midfielder to Old Trafford a few months ago, after his excellent performances in the Championship helped Villa win promotion to the Premier League.

A £50million price tag was mooted, but no deal got done before the transfer window closed in August.

McGinn has since impressed for Villa in the top flight, scoring three goals and adding an assist in just eight appearances to further enhance his reputation as a first-class talent.

Things became even better for the 24-year-old on Sunday as he scored his first career hat-trick in Scotland's 6-0 demolition of San Marino in a Euro 2020 qualifier.

His performances for club and country and sure to lead to renewed transfer interest in the run-up to the January window, and Man United will likely return for McGinn as they continue to struggle under Solskjaer - winning only two of their eight Premier League matches so far this season.

And Big Al, who represented the Red Devils during his playing days, says United should go out and sign McGinn when they have the chance.

“He’s top class for me," said Big Al on Monday's Sports Breakfast. "I love that he works his socks off and is busy all the time. He’s got a great engine.

“I’m gutted because I thought Celtic were getting him until something happened.

“But I’m pleased for him.

“Six weeks ago Manchester United were very interested in him.

“Without a doubt [he’s a good fit for United].

“McGinn would get the Old Trafford crowd going for a start, just with his energy and enthusiasm, and his ability.”
