Darren Ferguson praises Peterborough United trio after “comfortable” win over Southend United

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson has said that his side scored two “Premier League quality” goals courtesy of “outstanding assists” from playmaker Marcus Maddison after Posh defeated Southend United 2-0, succumbing the Shrimpers to their fourth loss in as many games.

Peterborough United picked up a much-needed confidence-boosting win over Southend United on Tuesday night, defeating the struggling Shrimpers 2-0 at Roots Hall.

Playmaker Marcus Maddison provided two more impressive assists for strikers Ivan Toney and Mo Eisa. The assists takes Maddison to four assists in as many games this season, with Toney bagging his third in four games and Eisa scoring his second for the club.

Speaking to the Peterborough Telegraph after the game, manager Darren Ferguson praised the goals his side scored, hailing them as “Premier League quality”.

“It was a good win,” Ferguson said.

“I think if I saw any team going away from home on a Tuesday night in this league and winning 2-0 I would think that was a good result. It wasn’t a perfect display and there are things to work on, but I am pleased.

“I think the two goals we scored were superb – Premier League quality. The two assists from Marcus Maddison were outstanding and Mo Eisa and Ivan Toney took the chances very well. We could have scored more to be honest.

“I am pleased for the players because they put a lot in on Saturday and were gutted not to take all three points against Ipswich. We kept a clean sheet and aside from their chance that hit the bar late on, we looked comfortable.”

Louis Reed, Josh Knight and George Boyd put in another impressive stint in the middle of the park, while left-back Frazer Blake-Tracy once again performed strongly in a comfortable backline. While Southend registered 11 shots, none of them were on target (BBC), allowing Christy Pym to keep his first competitive clean sheet since arriving from Exeter City.
