Swansea City loan star unlikely to be recalled by parent club early, says journalist

Journalist Chris Waugh – covering Newcastle United for The Athletic – has said that he does not think the Premier League side will look to recall Swansea City loan star Freddie Woodman at any point before the end of his loan spell.

The Athletic journalist Chris Waugh has said that while he is not sure if a recall option is even included in the deal, he believes it is unlikely that Newcastle United will look to recall goalkeeper Freddie Woodman from his loan spell at Swansea City.

With all goalkeepers at Newcastle United fit, there had not been any speculation regarding a possible return to Tyneside for Woodman. But, during a fans Q&A, journalist Waugh has said that he does not think the club will look to bring him back at any point, barring an injury to number one Martin Dubravka.

“I have to be honest and say I don’t know the exact specifics of the Woodman loan deal but I will try to find out. I haven’t heard that there is a re-call clause, but that doesn’t necessarily mean there isn’t,” said Waugh.

“He has started very well down in South Wales and he is a player who Newcastle hold huge hopes for. They believe he can be a future England No 1.

“I’d be surprised if Newcastle recalled Woodman, unless Dubravka gets injured, because the Slovakia international is the established first choice.

“Both Newcastle and Woodman want him to get as much first-team experience as possible and, if he is playing every game for Swansea in the Championship, then he is probably best served staying there throughout the season.”

Woodman has impressed since making his loan move to the Liberty Stadium earlier this summer, playing in all four of Swansea City’s Championship matches with Steve Cooper’s men making a strong start to the season. His penalty save against Derby County helped seal a point away from home, helping the Swans to 10 points from a possible 12 so far this season.
