New eco-friendly lights going in at Lincoln Cathedral

The familiar yellow glow of the Cathedral has been put out

Let there be light! Work has started to install new eco-friendly floodlights at Lincoln Cathedral.

As previously reported, more than 500 LED lights will replace the current system from 1972 to save 80% in energy.

The familiar yellow glow of the Cathedral has been put out, with the landmark expected to be hidden in the night for the next three months.

When the new system is up and running, the brighter white lights will further highlight the Cathedral’s intricate stonework.

The lights will also be able change colours, allowing the iconic building to recognise important local, national and international events.

It is being funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund to improve the Cathedral’s setting and visitor experience.

The Revd Canon John Patrick, Subdean of Lincoln, said: “Lincoln Cathedral is one of the UK’s most iconic landmarks, so we’re thrilled that its lighting system is going to be replaced with a modern, energy-saving LED system that will really do it justice.

“The Cathedral is not only Lincoln’s brightest shining beacon, but possibly the most visible building in the UK at night.

“Not being able to see our magnificent Cathedral lit up will be a temporary adjustment for all of us and a sobering reminder of what our city would be like without it.”
