Amazon adds to Chicago presence with Bridgeport warehouse

Amazon is teaming up with industrial titan Prologis to open a 112,000-square-foot last-mile facility in Bridgeport.

The facility at 2420 S. Halsted Street would employ 200 or more workers, according to Crain’s. It would serve as a second last-mile facility Amazon is opening in Chicago. The e-commerce giant already has a large facility on Goose Island, plus plans to open in McKinley Park, Pullman and Gage Park. Amazon also has warehouses in more far-flung areas such as Kenosha, Skokie, Downers Grove, University Park and Channahon.

Prologis built the facility, which is located near the Chicago River. Crowley’s Yacht Yard formerly occupied the 23-acre site, which is now being used as a truck yard, Alderman Patrick Thompson told Crain’s.

Financial terms of the deal between Amazon and Prologis weren’t disclosed.

Last week, residents expressed concern that the Amazon facility would bring diesel, gas and brake pad pollution to the air and river due to an uptick in truck traffic. Prologis needs a zoning change for the project to be developed, though it appears Thompson supports the plan.
