NEW DELHI: India’s and possibly the world’s most beautiful airport --
Pakyong in
Sikkim -- will not be aerially linked to the rest of the country from next month for some time.
SpiceJet was the only airline that used to fly here with a daily Kolkata-Pakyong-Kolkata after the airport opened last September. The airline will stop this sole flight connecting Sikkim’s first airport from June 1 and has not said when it will resume the same.
“SpiceJet has decided to temporarily suspend operations of its Kolkata-Pakyong-Kolkata flight from June 1 till further notice.
This is due to the unpredictable weather in Pakyong which results in very low visibility, hampering flight operations. The approaching
monsoon season will further aggravate the situation. To avoid inconvenience to our esteemed passengers, flight operations will be temporarily suspended,” said a SpiceJet spokesman.
SpiceJet was last August awarded two routes for Pakyong -- one each from Kolkata and Delhi -- under the
ude desh ka aam nagrik (
UDAN) scheme after the second round of bidding under regional connectivity scheme. The Delhi-Pakyong service had not yet started.
