AGARTALA: With increasing numbers of Covid-19 positive cases in the state, the Tripura government has decided that anybody who returns to the state by train or by road will have to undergo quarantine for 14 days even if he/she is not infected by the virus. This will not be applicable for all people returning by air.
The number of active Covid cases in Tripura has increased to 74 after 10 more returnees tested positive on Wednesday night.
According to reports, the total number of Covid-19 cases in Tripura now stands at 242 cases, with 165 of them having recovered.
No one has died due to the virus.
Among the fresh cases, five persons had returned from Chennai and Bengaluru, four from Mumbai by train and another was a railway pantry staff.
Government spokesperson education minister Ratan Lal Nath said that the council of ministers in a meeting reviewed the Covid situation in detail on Thursday.
"We have also studied the practices of other states and finally decided to send all the people to home quarantine for two weeks once they arrive in the state. Sample of all the returnees from Covid hotspots like Maharashtra and Delhi will be tested and if found positive, they will be brought to care centre or hospital and their entire contact chain would be tested," Nath stated.

He mentioned that as per the decision, the state government has extended the facility of government quarantine up to village level only for those do not have space at home, aged people or patients in the family. The government has already constituted a Covid monitoring and awareness committee up to the panchayat level with the elected representatives and they were asked to ensure cent percent home quarantine or manage facility quarantine for the home comers.
The chief minister had held a teleconference with secretaries of all panchayats and village councils and instructed them to set up at least one institutional quarantine centre in their respective areas, which would be functioning under the supervision of the health department.
