AGARTALA: When 25-year-old Sonu Devi, along with her husband raj Babu, boarded the general coach of the Kanchenjungha Express from AGARTALA on Saturday, little did she know that her life was about to change by the time she reached her destination: Malda. Devi was in an advanced stage of pregnancy, and was on their way home in Bihar.
Few hours after the journey began, Devi realised that she was in labour.
Co-passengers offered help, but the couple said they were fine. Minutes before the train was about to enter Dharmanagar station in north Tripura, Devi gave birth to a girl. It is at this point that help started coming in from unexpected quarters - particularly the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) and co-passengers.
Railway Police Force (RPF) constable Pranab Roy reported the matter to Dharmanagar station master and all arrangements for her treatment were kept ready. At the station, Dr Anupam Debbarma and his team from Dharmanagar railway hospital told the couple that the woman and the newborn needed to be admitted to a hospital for treatment, but they refused. However, once the train reached the mother refused to move out of the train.
The doctor made his duty by checking up both of them inside the train and provides all necessary materials to the mother and child along with some medicines.
"We all have requested them to break the journey at least for the day in our hospital and we also promised them to arrange their travel to Malda the next day because travelling immediately after delivery may harm both but the couple didn't agree. Then we issued advisory to all 26 station masters up to Malda to arrange their health check up, medicine and other accessories for the mother though both were alright. The train attendants and RPF personnel were also briefed about the emergency care," said Dr Debbarma.

The parents and newborn reached Malda on Sunday safely, and were received by the station master and their family members.
"The railway authority has not only provided extra amenities and care to the mother and child and railway doctors checked on them in each of station. Emergency medicines, food and materials for the newborn were provided by NFR officials and RPF jawans," said Babul Sutradhar, a co-passenger.
"I did not feel any discomfort in the train. They looked after me like a family member. the entire NFR team and many co-passengers wished us well. We are overwhelmed by the gesture," Sonu Devi told TOI.
