Ambulance attacked by forces on day of firing at Madhabbari: Report
Biplab Deb
AGARTALA: An ambulance taking patients from one hospital to another had come under attack soon after the police firing at Madhabbari in Jirania last month during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, a magisterial report on the incident states.
Eight persons were injured in the firing on January 8, soon after the Lok Sabha passed the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, which seeks citizenship for non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

"Police authorities have been asked to identify the personnel involved in attacking an ambulance carrying patients ... and legal action will be initiated against them," chief minister Biplab Deb told the assembly on Friday, while releasing the inquiry report.
The ambulance was carrying patients from Kherengbar Hospital at Khumulwng to GB Pant Hospital here when it was attacked by police and security personnel at Dasharambari, about 5 km from Madhabbari, where the protests were being staged.
"The personnel involved have not been specifically identified yet, but police, Tripura State Rifles (TSR) and CRPF battalions were involved," Deb said, adding, "Action will also be taken against TSR personnel involved in vandalizing a house nearby. Two cases have been registered on the Madhabbari incident at Radhapur and Ranirbazaar police stations in West Tripura."
The report also states a government doctor did not properly treat one of the protesters injured in police firing. "Since the protester did not receive timely medical support, the bullet in his body was removed after nine days ... The state government will take a note of the role of each and every individual involved in the incident. No one will be spared," Deb said.
Besides, the report notes "serious lapses" on part of police and paramilitary forces. "Sufficient police and paramilitary forces were at the disposal of the subdivisional police officer of Jirania, but the incident could not be contained due to lack of coordination among them ... The SDPO's role was not desirable. Action will be taken against him," the CM said. He added, "The role of police is not tolerable at all. We can't tolerate if police personnel mobilised for public safety disrupts peace and trigger tension."
