AGARTALA: The ruling BJP on Wednesday held a review meeting with top leaders of the party under the chairmanship of Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb to discuss th situation ahead of the coming panchayat elections in the state.
BJP sources said there was threadbare discussion on poll strategies and political activities at the grassroots level. The meeting has resolved to undertake all efforts to ensure peace and tranquility during electioneering.
The meeting reviewed the activities and performance of party leaders and legislators in the just-concluded parliamentary elections.
According to reports, Deb urged party leaders to stay away from any sort of violence and terror tactics and warned that anybody found indulging in any conspiracy would be dealt with seriously. "BJP as a party always prefers fair play in elections and to win the heart of the people by good work. The candidates of for the panchayat polls have to be selected on the basis of their dedication, hard work, personal image and educational qualification. I hope the leaders and workers of BJP would follow this principle in letter and spirit to help us make Tripura a model before the country in three years," Deb reportedly said at the meeting.
He stated that BJP had won both the Lok Sabha seats with the massive support of people. The party would now concentrate on swaying the voters' mind by doing good work beyond political enmity, said Deb.
"Tripura has a tradition of political violence and bloodshed which has given a bad name to us. We want to fight others with political ideology and beat the opposition with good work. For this, I need the support of each and every individual and political leaders," added the chief minister.
A 13-member committee for three-tier panchayat election was constituted with top leaders of the party under the chairmanship of education minister and veteran politician Ratan Lal Nath. All the elected MLAs, in coordination with local BJP leaders, will be involved in electioneering and Lok Sabha MP from West Tripura Pratima Bhowmik and East Tripura MP Rebati Tripura will supervise the entire activities.
According to the State Election Commission, as many as 12,02,989 people would exercise their franchise in the panchayat elections.
