AGARTALA: On the occasion of World Environment Day, multiple programmes were held in Tripura on Wednesday, both by the government and non-governmental bodies. Deputy chief minister Jishnu Dev Varma, who also holds the environment portfolio, kicked off fortnight-long celebrations at Sukanta Academy here.
Chief minister Biplab Deb began the programme by planting a sapling in his residence on Wednesday.
He appealed to everyone to plant as many trees as possible for a better tomorrow.
While addressing the gathering, the deputy chief minister stressed on the need to change individual lifestyles to tackle the problem of air pollution. "Narendra Modi is the first Prime Minister who m the commitment of India at a global forum to cut down on the emission of green house gases and launched the Ujjala Yojana, which has gone on to achieve a massive success across the country, including among the poor tribal people of the northeast," Dev Varma said.
He further stated that the Modi government, in its previous term, had already asked the states to use renewable sources of energy and multiple steps have been undertaken to cut down GHGs from transport sector. India has been marching ahead with the idea of electric, battery and hybrid new generation vehicles to comply with the commitment made to world communities, he said.
Leading socio-environmental research organisation, ARPAN Society, held a rally in the morning asking people to modify their lifestyles and reduce the use of fuel-driven vehicles. The body asked people to develop walking habits and use bicycles for shorter trips to reduce the air pollution.
