AGARTALA: As a part of the Green India Mission under climate change mitigation compliance, the Union ministry of heavy industries has sanctioned 50 electric buses for Tripura under the phase II of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in India Scheme (FAME).
After Assam, Tripura is the second state in the northeast to have been included in the scheme.
All the 50 electric buses will run in Agartala while 100 such buses will run in Assam, out of which 50 will be in Guwahati and 25 each in Silchar and Jorhat.

According to officials, the department of heavy industry had invited interest has sanctioned a total of 5,595 buses to 64 cities across the country. The department had received 86 proposals from different state governments for the deployment of 14,988 e-buses but after evaluation proposals, the project implementation and sanctioning committee sanctioned 5,595 electric buses. These include 400 electric buses for intercity operations and 100 electric buses for last-mile connectivity to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).
Each selected city and state transport undertaking was asked to initiate the procurement process for deployment of sanctioned electric buses in a time-bound manner. These buses will run about 4 billion kilometres during their contract period and are expected to save cumulatively about 1.2 billion litres of fuel over the period, which will result in cutting down emission of 2.6 million tones of green house gases, officials said.
