AGARTALA: The charred body of a 30-year-old woman, who was allegedly burnt alive by her in-laws, was recovered in Brajendranagar village of Madhupur in Sepahijala district of Tripura on Wednesday morning. Police have started an investigation but nobody has been arrested so far.
The woman, identified as Anumati Sarkar (Chowdhury), was a housewife and mother of two children.
Her charred body was found under a tree near her house on Wednesday morning. An empty drum of kerosene oil, a match box and a half-burnt piece of cloth were also found from the spot.
There have been problems in the family over dowry demands, sources said, adding that Anumati was being tortured by her in-laws. The woman's father, Matilal Sarkar, has lodged a complaint against her in-laws, except her husband Tinku Chowdhury, accusing them of homicide. "The previous night, her in-laws had a big fight with my daughter. Later, they tied her to a tree, covered her face and burnt her to death. A part of the tree and grass under it were also burnt, which indicates it was a clear case of homicide," Matilal said.
Police and forensic experts, however, said they still cannot confirm if it is a case of homicide and all possible angles are being investigated.
