AGARTALA: CPM's Tripura West candidate Shankar Prasad Datta filed a writ petition to the Tripura high court on Thursday, seeking its intervention to hold fresh polls to the Lok Sabha seat.
Election to Tripura West was held in the first phase on April 11. Following reports of violence and rising pressure from the opposition to conduct repolling, the Election Commission (EC) ordered re-election in 168 polling stations.
The returning officer had, however, reported irregularities in 433 polling stations - an issue both CPM and Congress took to the Supreme Court, demanding an explanation for the low number of polling stations chosen for repolling.
Datta had sought an urgent hearing of the matter, which the Supreme Court turned down. The vacation bench of Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Sanjeev Khanna asked him to file the case before the high court, which he did after withdrawing the petition from the Supreme Court.
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, meanwhile, has filed a writ petition on behalf of the party, seeking the Supreme Court's intervention in ordering re-election in the disputed 433 polling stations. The petition will be heard in a day or two. The EC has invited the Congress to send a delegation to discuss the demand for fresh polls. "If the discussion goes well, we will withdraw our petition," Pijush Kanti Biswas, vice-president of Congress's Tripura unit, said.
