IPFT calls off strike after meeting CM
Chief minister Biplab Deb
AGARTALA: A few hours before the dawn-to-dusk strike in Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTADC) was to begin, the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT), BJP's ally in the government, called it off after a meeting with the chief minister late on Tuesday night.
The strike had been called in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, seeking a separate state of Tipraland and demanding immediate byelection to the vacant village committee seats under the ADC.
At night, the IPFT leaders announced that the agitation had been withdrawn.
"IPFT stepped back after a meeting with chief minister Biplab Deb on Tuesday," party spokesperson Mangal Debbarma said.
BJP welcomed IPFT's decision and said, "We are happy that the alliance partner have called it off," BJP spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharjee said.
