AGARTALA: Tripura Police have held a 27-year-old student, who studies MBA in Bangalore, at Agartala airport and seized 30kg of cannabis from her possession, with her arrest leading to revelations about a cannabis-smuggling racket linked to the Middle East.
This is the first time that cannabis has been seized from a passenger on board a flight in the state.
Menaka Debbarma, a resident of Tairatbari hamlet of Mohanpur in West Tripura, was arrested at the Maharaja Bir Bikram airport on Monday after security officials found the cannabis in her hand luggage and forced her to deplane.
Debbarma had slipped in the cannabis in her hand luggage, which went undetected during the security check. Airlines officials said Debbarma had not provided the larger bag - which contained the cannabis - for checking, but carried a smaller hand luggage when she came to collect her boarding pass. However, the size of her larger bag reportedly attracted the attention of officials on board the flight, who then conducted a search and found the drug in her possession. CISF officials arrested her and later handed over over to the police.
Debbarma said she was a part of a group, comprising students from the state who study in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune, that is actively involved in smuggling of cannabis to countries in the Middle East. She added that her cousin, who stays in Bangalore, had sent her to bring the cannabis leaves from her village. Debbarma had flown from Bangalore to Kolkata from where she took an early morning flight to Agartala. After collecting the cannabis from her village, she was on a flight back to Bangalore, when she was intercepted by security officials and arrested.
