Patients turn violent over ‘poor facilities’ at Agartala youth hostel
AGARTALA: A group of patients undergoing treatment at a covid care centre at Bhagat Singh Youth Hostel here allegedly attacked health workers, demanding better care and food.
According to reports, over 200 Covid-19-infected patients, who have been undergoing treatment in the hostel, started complaining about the facilities and quality of food on Wednesday and later turned violent. Police had to be called in at night to control the situation.
The agitators damaged doors and windows of the hostel and misbehaved with the staff, sources said.
The agitation continued till Thursday morning before health officials assured them that their grievances would be addressed. Various doctors’ organisations condemned the incident and urged the state to ensure safety of medical staff.
Reacting to the incident, chief minister Biplab Deb said, “The doctors and health staff have been serving the patients tirelessly round the clock, and at least the patients must do is show them respect.”
Meanwhile, various district administrations in the state once again asked people to follow social distancing norms and other safety protocols as 102 fresh cases were reported in the state, taking the total number of active cases to 449. The total number of cases in the state now stands at 622.
