Royal scion questions IPFT’s silence on Tripura police firing
Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarman
AGARTALA: Tripura royal scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarman, who has been visiting the families of the anti-citizenship bill demonstrators who were injured in police firing in Madhabbari on January 8, questioned on Friday why BJP ally IPFT has remained silent over the incident.
“The state’s tribal parities, including IPFT, have been opposing the citizenship amendment bill. Even on the day of protest, IPFT workers were present at the site of the demonstration.
Now, when all political parties and organisations except BJP are demanding that a judicial probe be initiated into the incident by a sitting high court judge, IPFT leaders are surprisingly silent,” said Debbarman.
On Thursday, Debbarman went to the house of an injured protester in Jirania’s Dasharampara and assured his family of his commitment to the fight for justice. “My heart is burning for those innocent people and I did whatever I could to help them financially,” he told media later.
Debbarman added that there is video evidence which shows TSR personnel firing indiscriminately on protesters and even attacking an ambulance carrying an injured person. He deplored the state government’s failure to provide relief to the injured. He also brought to notice the damage sustained by a statue of Maharaja Bikram Kishore Manikya, Tripura’s last king, at the site of the incident.
