AGARTALA: Newly elected MP from BJP, Rebati Tripura, on Saturday accused workers of the party's ally, IPFT, of attacking his house. IPFT leaders, on the other hand, blamed BJP for the violence.
Tripura lodged an FIR, stating that a group of IPFT workers stormed his house at Durgapur in Gandacherra between 11pm and midnight on Friday and tried to set it on fire. "They also attempted to assault my family.
I was away in Agartala, so I escaped," Tripura said, adding that the attackers did not say what had spurred this violent reaction.
Rebati got in touch with the police here and the SP of Dhalai, who sent police forces to his home. The cops, however, took about 45 minutes to reach, by which time the criminals had left. "Unfortunately, despite my repeated attempts to contact the SDPO of Gandacherra and other police officials stationed there, I could not reach them. Their mobiles were found to be switched off. I must say such dereliction of duty is not acceptable," Tripura said, adding that the matter was conveyed to the chief minister and other leaders of the party.
According to reports, BJP supporters had taken out a victory rally in Gandacherra to celebrate Rabati's victory in the Lok Sabha elections. After a while, Rebati left for Agartala. The trouble began after he left the town.
IPFT general secretary Mevar Kumar Jamatia, on the other hand, alleged that BJP workers from the victory rally had attacked the house of their party assistant general secretary and chairman of Ganganagar block, Jibanjoy Reang, and ransacked his house at night. However, Reang was able to escape.
Later at night, the same group with two vehicles attacked the house of another leader, Prem Kumar Tripura, he added.
