A hailstorm with wind speeds of 130-135 kmph that lasted barely two minutes barrelled through several parts of Tripura on Wednesday, leaving behind uprooted trees, damaged lamp posts and destroyed farm produce.

AGARTALA: A hailstorm with wind speeds of 130-135 kmph that lasted barely two minutes barrelled through several parts of Tripura on Wednesday, leaving behind uprooted trees, damaged lamp posts and destroyed farm produce.
The squall damaged paddy and seasonal vegetables in West Tripura and Sepahijala districts while a large number of dwelling units were damaged. Electric poles and trees have had been uprooted in many places across the state.
However, till the time of filing this report, there was no report of any causality or injury.
The state disaster management team has been mobilised to restore services. Chief minister Biplab Deb asked operators to restore services quickly and added that those affected by the squall would be given compensation by the end of the week.
He called on local elected bodies and district administrations to help out those affected. In many places in the state, including Agartala, trees and electricity poles have been uprooted due to the strong winds. Many slum houses were also blown away in the storm.
Meanwhile, the state witnessed heavy pre-monsoon showers, coupled with squall and thunderstorm, since early morning, paralysing normal life in Tripura, delaying movement of goods trains and special trains carrying migrant workers.
Power supply and water supply have been affected severely across the state due to the power cut after snapping of transmission lines. Trees have been uprooted in Agartala and various parts of the national highway were blocked.
The meteorological department has forecast heavy showers and thunderstorm in the state in the next 48 hours.
