Ahmedabad: 12 labourers allege torture by cops

Nayan Remsingh Bhuriya, 22, from Jhabua in Madhya Pradesh, and 11 other daily wagers — including two women — say they won’t be able to work for a month because their bodies have been wrecked by the torture meted out to them by Sabarmati Riverfront (West) police. The cops apparently wanted to prise out the confession of murder from them following the discovery of the body of an unidentified man, about 25 years old, in a ground near Tagore Hall in Paldi.

Bhuriya’s medical history report from VS Hospital
Bhuriya had come to the city to tend to the garden of the events’ centre on the Sabarmati riverfront.
The toes of his right foot are fractured. He says he was beaten by four constables and others on Wednesday and Thursday. Four other labourers were allegedly given shocks to their private parts with a hand-held battery device. Pictures that have surfaced of some of the victims show thick welts on their buttocks.
“They picked us up at 10am on Wednesday and started beating us without even saying what they were accusing us of,” said Bhuriya, who had married one-and-a-half months ago and came to the city eight days ago with his wife.
Five other labourers, working as gardeners on the riverfront events’ centre, have been identified as Anil Damor, 25, a native of Dahod; Dita Ninama, 40, also of Dahod; Dharu Mavi, 30, and Rakesh Damor, 32, of Jhabua; and Shambhu Mavi, 32. They say except Anil and Dharu, all of them were given shocks.
Bhuriya said that the cops had even asked questions about his sexual life. “They told me to give them a clue about the murder or to confess to the crime,” he said. Six construction workers were also allegedly beaten by police in connection with the same probe. Sanjay Damor, 19, and his wife Usha, 20, from Dahod; Manu Atila, 28, and his wife Surekha Atila, 30; Dalpat Mudel, 32, and Shailesh Hajaria, 24, from Dahod were allegedly beaten. Sanjay and Manu said that they were given shocks to their private parts. Inspector M A Singh of the Sabarmati Riverfront (West) police said: “We will initiate action against all cops involved. We asked the contractor to file an application, but he didn’t,” she said.
