Ahmedabad: 18 arrested for gambling

AHMEDABAD: Ahead of the Janmashtami festival, which is marked by gambling sessions, the city registered two major gambling cases, in which 18 persons were booked and articles worth Rs 15.50 lakh were seized, in the Navrangpura and Anandnagar areas.
In the first case, lodged by Navrangpura police, eight persons were rounded up and articles worth Rs 7 lakh including a car worth Rs 6 lakh, eight cellphones worth Rs 42,500 and Rs 63,600 cash, were seized by the cops.

According to the FIR filed by constable Vipul Aaydaan, they received intelligence that a gambling den was being run at house No.10 on the fifth floor of Rajyog Apartments on CG Road in Navrangpura. When the cops reached the flat, the door was open. The cops entered and caught the eight persons gambling, red-handed, the FIR states.
The gambling den was being run by Shailesh Phoolchand Jain, 56, a resident of Bodakdev and Jayanti Vadilal Patel, 57, a resident of Thaltej, the FIR states.
In the other case, Anandnagar police nabbed 10 persons for gambling and seized articles worth Rs 8.52 lakh which include Rs 98,000 cash, eight cellphones worth Rs 70,000, gambling chips, playing cards and two four-wheelers worth Rs 6.85 lakh.
Sub-inspector M H Shinol of Anandnagar police in the FIR stated that he and other cops were on patrol when they received an input that a gambling den was being run at flat No. 32 of Kirti-Sagar Apartments near Balaji Gardens Crossroad in Anandnagar. They raided the house and caught the 11 persons red-handed, states the FIR.
Police said that Anil Mulji Thakkar, the owner of the flat, would invite gamblers to the place and ran the gambling den.
Police lodged cases under the Gambling Act and began an investigation against the accused persons.
