AHMEDABAD: A pall of gloom descended on posh Sunrise Park Society in the Vastrapur area of the city, as 44-year-old Gurmeet Singh Dhingra, a resident of bungalow number 19, committed suicide by shooting himself in the head on Wednesday.
Vastrapur police officials on Friday said that Dhingra, who ran an automobile parts business in Rakhial, had been suffering from severe depression for the last six months, following his divorce from his wife of 19 years.

On Wednesday afternoon, Dhingra went into his bathroom. Suddenly, his 18-year-old son, Rayveer, heard a gunshot. A shocked Rayveer called his grandfather — Ujjal Singh, 70, who was at a bank at that time — and apprised him of the shocking incident of his father claiming his life by shooting himself in the bathroom. Ujjal Singh rushed home and found Gurmeet lying in a pool of blood with a bullet wound on his right temple.
The family rushed Gurmeet to a private hospital at Sunrise Park, where doctors declared him dead. The hospital authorities called Vastrapur police, which filled out a panchnama of the deceased’s house and sent the body to the Asarwa Civil Hospital for a postmortem. A team of forensic experts was also roped in for the postmortem, said inspector M M Jadeja of Vastrapur police station.
According to Ujjal Singh’s statement, Gurmeet had been suffering from depression after his wife separated from him and was under medication, added Jadeja. The Dhingras’ bungalow, ‘Matrukrupa’, wore a deserted look on Friday. A security guard there said that the bereaved family had gone to the gurudwara to find some solace. The guard said the deceased’s parents and son were shell-shocked and completely shaken up due to the untoward incident. The guard added, “Gurmeet sahab was a very jolly person till about a year ago. After the separation from his wife, he became a recluse and did not speak much.” Vastrapur police registered a case of accidental death for the time being and began an investigation.
