Ahmedabad: English medium does better than Gujarati

English-medium students again outdid the Gujarati-medium students, as they recorded an 83.96% passing rate, against 72.43% for the Gujarati-medium. The Gujarat board’s HSC general stream results were declared on Saturday.

AHMEDABAD: English-medium students again outdid the Gujarati-medium students, as they recorded an 83.96% passing rate, against 72.43% for the Gujarati-medium. The Gujarat board’s HSC general stream results were declared on Saturday. Cumulatively, 73.27% of examinees passed the exam, which was 4.3 percentage points more than in 2018. In 2018, 68.97% of examinees had passed.

Of the 3.52 lakh regular students who took for the HSC general stream exam, 2.58 lakh students were successful. About 17,000 more students took the examination this year.

According to the education department, the Navrangpura centre in Ahmedabad had the highest passing rate, 95.66%. Morva Raina in Panchamahal had the lowest, 15.43%.
District-wise, Patan had the highest passing rate, 85.03%, while Panchamahals had the lowest, 45.82%.
Girls again did better than boys, with a passing rate of 79.27%, against 67.94% for boys.
This year, 792 students scored more than 90% marks, against 451 such students in 2018. Officials said that the number of students scoring higher than 80% but less than 90%, was higher than in 2018. This number was 11,786 this year, compared to 8,215 in 2018.

According to the statistics provided by the board, this year 1,01,966 students failed in one subject, 57,525 failed in two and 27,432 failed in three. The number of students failing in one subject is 15% higher than last year. In 2018, 88,207 had failed in one subject. This number was 58,961 in 2017 and 26,569 in 2016.
According to board officials, some 2,730 students were caught cheating in the exam this year, either through CCTV footage by board squads. Cheating cases has been filed against 1,332 students in 2018; 1,021 in 2017; 1,468 in 2016 and 5,162 in 2015.
In 2019, of the 2,730 cheating cases reported, 959 involved mass cheating, while 151 were caught by various squads during the examination and 1,620 were caught cheating when officials scanned through CCTV footage.
