AHMEDABAD: As Vastrapur police filed an FIR for a man not being allowed to live in his own flat in Bodakdev, the secretary of the housing society again threatened and abused the man, when he went to put his possessions in the house he had bought for Rs 20 lakh.
The complainant, Mahendra Teli (Modi), a physically handicapped man runs a snacks stall and bought the 2BHK flat in Sankalp Apartments near Pakwan Crossroads in the posh Bodakdev locality on May 24.
However, he was barred from moving in as he belongs to an OBC community. On Friday, he moved a complaint with Vastrapur police, as the secretary of the society, Arvind Patel, threatened him and told him not to live in the house as he belongs to the Modi Marwadi community, which falls in the OBC category.
On Monday morning, when Mahendra and his brother Shantilal went to their flat to settle in, believing that they would not be harassed as they had approached the police, Patel again threatened and verbally abused them, while barring them from entering the flat.
Shantilal then called the cops and Vastrapur police rushed to the spot. However, Patel was adamant about not allowing them to live there and the policemen left the spot. Mahendra finally left the possessions he had brought to put in the house in the parking lot, stayed there the whole day and returned on Monday evening.
Patel allegedly told Mahendra that Rabaris, Muslims, Bharwads, and Marwadis are not allowed in the society. He had also told Mahendra’s brother Shantilal to take his money back.
Shantilal had earlier told Vastrapur police that Patel emphasized that only upper-castes such as Patels and Brahmins could buy flats in the society. Inspector M M Jadeja of Vastrapur police said that he would verify the allegations and then arrest the accused if he had threatened the complainant.
