AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat high court was informed on Tuesday that Gujarat has the second highest number of cases of swine flu in the country and third highest number of deaths after Rajasthan and Maharashtra in the current year.
In an affidavit filed in connection with his PIL filed in 2016, petitioner Manasvi Thapar cited the details about deaths caused due to spread of H1N1 as revealed by the government in the Parliament in June.
Total swine flu cases recorded in the state are 4,774 by June end. Only Rajasthan had more number of cases, 5,021. There were 149 people who lost their lives in Gujarat. In Rajasthan, there were 205 deaths and in Maharashtra, 189 people died due to swine flu. There were 26,140 cases of swine flu reported from across the country, and 1,079 people died because of the disease.

During the hearing, petitioner’s advocate K R Koshti submitted that the spread of the disease and deaths reflected that little steps were taken by the administration despite repeated directions issued by the high court since 2011. He insisted that the health infrastructure should be provided to rural and urban areas and in tribal as well as non-tribal areas equally.
The lawyer also apprised the court that the government has not not updated figures regarding various diseases being reported by different hospitals – government as well as private – after June.
The petitioner pointed out to the spread of infectious and vector borne disease and submitted that the number of cases being reported is increasing alarmingly. The bench hearing the case also commented that the spread would be much faster after the cloud cover is cleared after monsoon.
The HC has posted further hearing on the issue next week.
The PIL demands HC directions to the state authorities and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to undertake various measures to curb spread of communicable and vector-borne diseases. The government and the civic body had filed affidavits in the past informing the high court about steps taken to curb the spread of the diseases.
