AHMEDABAD: After widespread heavy rainfall in past ten days, weather forecast by India Meteorological Department (IMD) pointed towards dissipation of the system. While light to medium rainfall is expected across the state and heavy rainfall in scattered places, IMD officials said that there are no major systems in sight for next four to five days.
Jayanta Sarkar, regional director, IMD, said that the well-marked low-pressure area above the state which brought good rainfall in various parts of the state has moved further west.
“Thus, it is likely that the state may not expect heavy to very heavy rainfall - which was observed by a few regions recently,” he said.
Monsoon trough north of Gujarat and another trough on entire western coast persists and may provide rainfall, said experts. IMD has warned about heavy rainfall in Dang, Navsari, Valsad and Tapi along with Union Territories of Daman, Dadra & Nagar Haveli on August 13 and 14.
With good rainfall over past 10 days, the state has become rain surplus state. According to IMD website, Gujarat on August 11 had 29% overall more rainfall than the long-term average for the specific period. Saurashtra and Kutch, which were in deficit till earlier this week, have also recorded surplus rainfall thanks to incessant rainfall experienced in various districts.
According to Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) statistics, first 11 days of August have given more rainfall than the total rainfall of June and July months combined. This year, June recorded 108.59mm and July 222.37mm rainfall against which August has recorded 347.29mm rainfall. The seasonal rain deficit which was 53.85% on August 1 is now reduced to 16.88%.
