AHMEDABAD: It seems like the soaring prices of flour and lentils, apart from hitting the common man, has affected the IPS mess. The mess in Shahibaug restricted its tiffin service for retired and serving senior police officers.
DGP Shivanand Jha, who is the ex-officio president of the IPS mess, after consulting members and amending the rules in April 2018 through oral orders directed that no police officer, retired or serving, can order tiffin delivery for more than one month.

Senior members of the IPS association said that an officer wants to continue the tiffin service beyond a month, permission from the DGP will be needed. The matter has reached senior politicians, who some officers have approached for a solution.
A senior officer and office-bearer of the mess said that the rules do not provide for tiffin deliveries, but some officers would send orderlies to collect tiffins.
“We charge a nominal price for a tiffin, on no-profit or no-loss basis,” said one office-bearer of IPS mess.
While some officers raised the issue with the government, the mess office-bearers defended the directive, saying that some officers who live with their families continue to order tiffins from the mess.
Senior members of the IPS association said that earlier several members and retired officers would order tiffins from the mess for several months.

“The membership fee is Rs 15,000 and the annual fee is Rs 1,500. We make some money from renting the out mess rooms to officers or renting the premises for functions. Because the mess operates on a no-profit or no-loss basis, it is hard to provide the tiffin service continuously,” said another office-bearer.
Several retired and serving officers raised concerns about Jha’s oral directive.
“Many of our officers live away from their families for several months. In such a situation, it is convenient for them to get food from the mess. Now it will be hard for them to arrange for food,” said a retired IPS officer.
More than 180 IPS officers and around 400 senior police officials are members of the IPS mess.
