AHMEDABAD: They are the real frontline Covid-19 warriors – and have borne the brunt of the disease the most. An anonymous list that made rounds in several doctors’ groups on Thursday indicated that the number of junior (resident and intern) doctors in government hospitals is more than 100 now and they make 73% of total affected doctors in government hospital set-ups.
In fact, the list being circulated indicated 62 junior doctors from Civil hospital, 22 from GCRI, 11 from LG hospital, 16 from NHL/ SVP hospital, five from Sola Civil hospital and one each from UN Mehta Heart Institute and IKDRC testing positive so far.
In all, there are 116 junior doctors infected so far compared to 38 senior doctors/ faculties. The status of five doctors was not known. The list of 197 also identified 38 private doctors who have tested positive so far in the city.

This lends major credence to allegations made on different platforms that it is junior doctors who are running the show in Covid wards of government hospitals.
‘Only 10 of 75 are senior doctors’
The situation is most glaring in Civil hospital, Ahmedabad wherein of the total 75 infected, only 10 are senior doctors.
Two points that were raised by a resident doctor in a letter that went viral after AIIMS director Dr Randeep Guleria's visit at Civil hospital on May 9 included “back-stepping of experienced higher authorities” and “indifference by higher authorities towards residents”.
The list of grievances mentioned that majority of the faculties in the institute (Covid-19 hospital) did not perform the minimum expected duty of them - taking rounds which ultimately lead to mortality of patients. “Covid positive
resident doctors have been kept stranded for long hours in spite of high grade fever owing to the indecisiveness and lack of prior preparation of management regarding treatment of resident doctors.”
The Gujarat high court recently took cognizance of an anonymous letter written by a resident doctor at Civil Hospital about plight of the doctors at the hospital that mentioned that they were not given PPE kits, N-95 masks or proper gloves.
“If the condition remains same in the Civil hospital, doctors working here will be super spreaders of Covid-19,” wrote the letter, adding that not even 10% of the 700-odd resident doctors working at the hospital are tested for Covid-19 despite all of them staying in a common hostel and working together.
While Dr MM Prabhakar, OSD for Medicity, was not available for comment, senior officials said that multiple meetings have already been conducted with the doctors to address their grievances. “A committee of senior private doctors was also formed to ensure redressing every point raised,” said an official.
